Streaming powerhouse Netflix is revamping its approach to film production. The company’s film chairman, Dan Lin, has decided to scale its original movie output down from the usual 50 per year to just 25-30.

Two causes sparked the change. One, a shift in focus toward creating higher-quality movies that resonate with audiences and two, saving money.

The pivot also reflects a broader understanding of viewer preferences and the need to stand out among competitors. Historically, Netflix embraced a “more is more” strategy, flooding its platform with an extensive variety of films in hopes of capturing diverse viewer interests. However, as competition intensified, Netflix has recognized that quantity alone doesn’t guarantee success.

Netflix researchers have identified that audiences are becoming more selective about what they watch. They found most people gravitate towards films that deliver compelling storytelling, engaging characters, and high production values. By prioritizing quality, Netflix aims to foster stronger emotional connections with its audience, enhancing viewer satisfaction and loyalty.

Central to this strategy is the commitment to collaborating with top-tier talent. Netflix is investing heavily in partnerships with acclaimed directors, writers, and actors such as Martin Scorsese, Cameron Diaz, Ryan Reynolds, and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson who have proven track records in delivering hit films. By teaming up with such leaders, the platform not only boosts its creative output but also its reputation as a serious player in the film industry.

Moreover, Netflix is making significant investments in original content. Everything from big-budget action films to intimate dramas and innovative documentaries are to be anticipated. The goal is to create a robust slate of films that not only attract subscribers but also critical acclaim and awards recognition. This shift also indicates a broader industry trend. Studios are prioritizing prestige projects that can elevate their brand and create cultural impact.

Some Netflix originals have already met that criteria. The Crown and The Queen’s Gambit each won 11 Emmy awards in 2021, the most wins by Netflix in a single year. Our Great National Parks, narrated by President Barack Obama, won an Emmy for Outstanding Narrator. Household favorites Ozark, Stranger Things, House of Cards, and Squid Game also all became Emmy nominees.

This season you can find features for the whole family. Here are five films and shows to enjoy with loved ones this November.
