The holiday season is a time of celebration, indulgence, and relaxation. This usually means diets go out the window. Parties, family gatherings, and festive meals – understandably – take precedence over exercise during the time between Thanksgiving and the new year. However, staying active during the holidays doesn’t have to be a challenge. Here are some practical tips to help you stay fit and healthy during this busy season:

5 Practical Tips For Staying Active and Fit During the Holidays

1. Start Your Day with Movement

Holiday schedules are filled with joyous occasions that don’t usually include exercise (unless you count house hopping as a form of physical activity). Avoid completely foregoing your health goals by starting your day with movement. A simple walk or bike ride will do. Getting your steps in early means the guilt of enjoying holiday treats will be at a minimum. Not to mention you will be more inclined to make healthy choices throughout the day.

2. Stay Consistent with Short Workouts

When prioritizing your health this season remember to be realistic and don’t overexert yourself. If finding time for longer workouts is difficult, commit to short, manageable workout sessions. 20-30 minutes of exercise a day can make a big difference in staying active. Make working out even more manageable by breaking up your exercise into shorter segments throughout the day. A 10-minute workout in the morning, followed by a quick walk after lunch, and a stretching routine before bed can all add up. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) or bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, and push-ups can be done in the comfort of your home with little equipment required.

3. Include Loved Ones in Your Workouts

Take advantage of extra company by turning loved ones into workout buddies. Organize family jogs, swims, or zumba classes to get the whole party involved. If your loved ones decline a formal workout invitation, incorporate movement into the festivities. Suggest games after meals like tag, frisbee, or football. Add adventure with a holiday scavenger hunt or winter sports like ice skating, skiing, snowboarding, or sledding if the weather permits. These activities not only help you stay active but also add fun to the celebrations. While traveling together, take advantage of hotel fitness centers or resort classes. At airports, you can also opt to peruse the terminal instead of sitting at the gate.

4. Healthy Swaps for Holiday Favorites

While staying active is crucial, what you eat also plays a significant role in maintaining health during the holidays. Choose healthier versions of your favorite dishes when possible. Mashed cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes, for example. Or, maple syrup instead of sugar in the sweet potato casserole. Sautéed green beans instead of green bean casserole works as well. You can also balance indulgences with nutritious swaps like green smoothies for breakfast or salads for lunch.

5. Limit Holiday-Induced Stress

Wellness requires a holistic approach. The mind, body, and spirit must be balanced in order to be truly healthy. With this said, have a plan to avoid or manage holiday stress. Incorporate deep breathing exercises and mindfulness techniques into your holiday routine.
