Tia Mowry has battled with eczema since childhood, but now says she has the condition under control. In a new interview with The Zoe Report, the actress opened up the steps she takes to keep eczema at bay.

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, affects more than 31 million people in the U.S. alone. Mowry said her symptoms were often dismissed and referred to as “sunspots” until she was formally diagnosed with the chronic skin condition in her late 20s.

“I wasn’t diagnosed until I was like 26 or 27 years old, so I suffered in silence,” she said.

It took some time, but Mowry soon realized achieving great skin is an inside job.

“Stress and certain foods are triggers for me, so I’m doing things like meditating, journaling, and being mindful of what I eat — I think sometimes these things get overlooked,” she revealed. “Drinking water to help flush out toxins has also been extremely beneficial for my skin.”

The reality star used to have a 10-step everyday skincare routine, but now understands that less is more when managing her eczema. She gravitates toward less toxic ingredient lists for the products that make it into her daily beauty routine.

“Leaning more towards products, whether for my hair, body, or face, that are less toxic has been helpful for me,” she said.

Mowry is also a fan of at-home beauty treatments such as red light therapy. Fellow celebrities Kelly Rowland and Halle Berry take part in the regimen. Red light therapy can boost collagen and reduce inflammation.

“It helps soothe my skin, leaving my complexion looking more even and radiant,” she said.

As a woman in her 40s and nearing middle age, Mowry said she is all about keeping things as natural as possible as she embraces aging. She does indulge in skin tightening and sculpting techniques such as icing her face with DIY green tea ice cubes and gua sha, a natural therapy that involves massaging your skin with oil and an uniquely shaped smooth-edged tool.
