Angela Bassett graced the cover of Town & Country magazine’s March Issue, looking divine as ever. The stunning mogul seems to be aging backward as she strikes a fierce pose in a fabulous, textured regalia—a perfect look for the queen she is. In the issue, the prominent Black actress talks her acting career, choosing strong roles, and more.

Angela Bassett has come a long way from her humble beginnings as a young actress trying to navigate an industry that does not cater to her kind. Her tenacious acting skills have been key in her longevity in the business as she has snagged some iconic roles that will forever live rent-free in our heads (cue Bernadine Harris and the Waiting to Exhale fire scene). Although she has gone on to play other legendary characters, Bassett continues to approach every role as if she is just starting.

“You’re just trying to find little pieces where you are, little moments of daylight to be able to do this,” she told Town & Country. “So no matter how small it was, it was just a joy and a blessing. I wonder if that’s why, when I get the opportunity, whatever opportunity it is, to perform or to be in front of an audience, to me it’s daylight. It’s really…You don’t take it for granted.”

The powerful roles Bassett often plays on the screen inspire many women to unapologetically be themselves. In her most recent role, she plays President Evelyn Mitchell, where she leads a nation with confidence and poise. The “What’s Love Got to Do with It” actress is no stranger to strong characters and prefers them over others.

“All of that, I think, was thrown into the pot that is my life, the gumbo that is my life, and seasoned it, so that my choices were a strong woman who was in control of herself and her situation,” the mother revealed to Town & Country. ” So that appealed to me. Gentle is something different. But weak? She never takes command of her situations. That didn’t appeal to me.”
