On July 20, officials responded to reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, deputies found 20-year-old Cesar Peralta unresponsive and suffering from gunshot wounds. McDowell was arrested last week and as of Monday (Aug 5), he remains behind bars with a $400,000 bond on the murder charge.
“This is an unfortunate situation and I am in prayer for Akili and those impacted by this tragedy,” his manager, Jonell Whitt, said in a statement per The Associated Press.
Witnesses told police they saw Peralta arguing with another man prior to the shooting. That person left the scene on foot.
McDowell, age 21, got his acting break at 16 years old as the lead character the coming of age drama “David Makes Man,” which debuted on OWN in 2019. In the series, McDowell played a promising young student balancing the grim realities of his environment against choices that could change his life forever.
His acting credits also include the series “Billions,” and most recently, the 2024 crime drama, “The Waterboyz.”
