Jonathan McReynolds, who is officially celebrating his birthday today (September 17), threw himself the “ultimate” birthday bash over the weekend.

You only turn 35 once and the gospel superstar brought in his new year with a bang. The Grammy award winning artist gathered his (and ours) favorite entertainers in the faith for an epic party.

Among the guests and performers were Jason Nelson, Smokie Norful, Anthony Brown, Darrel Walls, Peter Collins, and DOE. His “aunties” in the faith, Kim Burrell, The Isaacs, and Tonya Baker were also in tow. Comedians Anna Douglas, Lexi, and Will Johnson were in the building bringing non stop laughs. Kirk Franklin even came on his day off from the Reunion Tour to support his friend and colleague. McReynolds didn’t leave his supporters out. Hundreds grabbed tickets to join the former “Sunday Best” judge ring in his personal new year.

The two-day celebration of life he called ‘THE WKND’ was held last Friday and Saturday at the Theatre at Capital Turnaround in Washington, D.C.

Night one included a concert packed with songs from McReynolds’ personal playlist sung live by talented vocalist friends and peers. Two hours of “fun, music, and good vibes” followed at the Club Hope Afterparty hosted by DJ Malski.

On night two, McReynolds showed off his singing skills with a concert for attendees. He performed a blend of classic and new songs from all his albums and surprised the crowd with special guest performances. The second evening also featured a “McRoast.” The impromptu comedy show poked fun at the guest of honor all in good humor.

The artist posted favorite moments from the first night including a sweet video Chicago two-stepping with his mother, a moment of praise with Smokie Norful, and another laid across the lap of his “aunties” as they wished him happy birthday cheerfully.

Guests recounted their experience under the artist’s Instagram posts, one saying, “It’s gonna take a month to recover! Worship, voices, music. Just magic. The Isaacs have been added to the playlist and Anthony asking you to do a little shout out was great.”

Another added, “I had the absolute best time both nights. What an awesome way to celebrate one’s birth by praising God all night in the midst of Congressional Black Caucus Weekend. You could have been anywhere else, but God!”

A third leaving a kind birthday blessing, “What an, absolutely, incredible night! This night was to celebrate you, and it poured into me and so many others. God’s presence was there from the moment you began to sing, ‘Grace.’ My sister and I recently lost our mother. Friday night was a blessing to us and so many moments of the evening reminded us of her all the way to Kim Burrell singing, ‘Be Grateful.’ I cry now just thinking about it. I’m praying for you! I pray that you are filled to overflowing! I’m praying that everything lost, stolen, or given up is restored to you, in Jesus’ name. You are a gift. I pray that you know that, sir, God bless you, always! Shalom to your heart, life, body, and soul.”
