A good evening routine is an important part of any self care ritual. Taking intentional steps to wind down for the night and prepare for the morning will help you get a restful night’s sleep and face the day with renewed energy and optimism. Including some Bible study and time with God in your nighttime regimen is a great way to ensure that you hit the pillow with peace of mind and a restful spirit, trusting in God’s provision and peace.
If you’re looking for help quieting the brain before bed and filling your heart with hope for tomorrow, these 7 Bible verses will help you rest easy in the love of the Lord and the promises of God.
(All verses are the New King James Version)
Psalm 23: 1-2
You’re probably familiar with this one; this chapter and verse in the book of Psalm is famous for a reason. “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want./He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.” David’s words remind us that God is there for us, watching over us and protecting us at all times, even while we rest. There’s no need to stay up with worry or stress, rest easy knowing that you’re being looked out for.
Matthew 6:34
A lot of times, sleep evades us because we’re anxious about the next day. But why worry about tomorrow? Jesus tells us not to worry about the future and trust that God will take care of us. “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Even if you’re excited about what’s to come, stay present in the moment and let God take care of the rest.
Matthew 11:28-29
In this chapter in the New Testament book of Matthew, Jesus reminds us that we can find rest in the arms of the Father and whatever worries are swirling in our minds, we can give to God to take care of. “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. /Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” When we lay down our burdens, our bodies and our minds can finally rest.
John 14:27
There are a lot of things people do to help them wind down for the night. Sleepytime teas, melatonin, or putting on a boring documentary can certainly help lull you into slumber. But Jesus tells us that true peace comes when our spirit is at ease. We can find that peace in Him. John 14:27 reads: “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
Psalm 127:2
In a world that pressures us to be productive, to hustle and grind and sleep when we’re dead, God reminds us multiple times in the Bible how important it is to rest. The second verse of Psalm 127 tells us “It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.” Sometimes, rest is the most important thing you can do in a day.
Proverbs 3:24
Before you lay down to sleep, express gratitude to God for protecting you through the night and allowing you to see a new day. “When you lie down, you will not be afraid; Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet.” This verse reminds us that we are safe to close our eyes for the night. Allow God’s protection to embrace you as you enter dreamland.
Isaiah 26:3
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” This verse helps us calm our minds before bed to ensure a good night’s sleep. Meditating on the goodness of God can bring peace and comfort as you wind down for the night.
