With election season crawling to a close in the next month or so, a push to put climate concerns at the top of your agenda is coming to the doorsteps of voters across America.
Climate Revival is a new nonprofit that is dedicated to mobilizing faith communities and people of color through the power of music. This month, they’re launching the Climate Revival Tour. The eight-city engagement is meant to encourage church congregations and community members to consider climate change as a critical issue on the ballot. The tour comes after Climate Revival’s launch in Washington, D.C. that featured appearances from Leslie Odom Jr, Rep. Justin J. Pearson (TN), Roishetta Ozane (Gulf Coast Frontline Organizer), Sharon Lavigne (TIME 100 Recipient), Maya Penn (Filmmaker & Environmentalist) and more.
“New storms with new names almost every week, unbearable heatwaves, drought, food insecurity, toxic air and water,” said Antonique Smith, Grammy-nominated singer, actress and Climate Revival CEO and co-founder. “We are facing a multitude of crises and we need to join together to protect God’s creation. The Climate Revival Tour is bringing our communities together through faith, stories, music, and our joy to inspire more voices at the polls and win this battle against climate change.”
The tour kicks off in St. James, Louisiana, also known as “Cancer Alley.” It’s an 85-mile stretch of land along the Mississippi River with more than 200 petrochemical operations and accounts for 25% of the petrochemical production in the U.S.. The people who live there are at a 95% higher risk of cancer than most of the nation. It’s a predominantly Black area.
“We are in the midst of a climate crisis and what we need is a climate revival,” said Rev Yearwood, President of the Hip-Hop Caucus and Climate Revival co-founder. “We must transition from fossil fuels to clean energy, and we must use our faith, our love, our culture and our humanity to make this change. Our environment cannot be a partisan or political issue. We are God’s children, and we must do everything we can to make our planet livable for future generations.”
The tour will partner with churches throughout swing states such as North Carolina, Georgia and Pennsylvania to host each event. There will be performances from Smith, Yearwood, plus special guests and a climate conversation. You can reserve tickets for the events on climaterevival.org.
