President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will be in Houston this week to pay their final respects to Sheila Jackson Lee, the prolific lawmaker who passed on July 19th at age 74 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

This will be Harris’ third trip to Texas this month: On July 25th, she delivered the keynote speech at the American Federation of Teachers’ 88th National Convention.
“Sheila Jackson Lee was, first and foremost, a leader dedicated to serving the people of her beloved city,” Harris said in a statement. “No task was too small as long as it was the right thing to do.”
Biden will travel to Houston July 29 and is expected to visit Houston City Hall, where Jackson Lee is lying in state. The Vice President will deliver a eulogy at Jackson Lee’s homegoing service on Thursday.
For more than three decades, Sheila Jackson Lee served the people of Houston and was one of its most prominent political figures. Among her many political accolades, including establishing the Juneteenth Federal Holiday and reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act.
Beginning Monday (July 29) The City of Houston will honor the life and legacy of late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee with remembrance services.
