A wellness paradise located in north Texas is on the rise once again as a premiere healthcare destination.

Mineral Wells, Texas was designated the official Wellness Capital of Texas by state legislators in 2023. It boasts nine underground wells with bountiful mineral content. The water is packed full of micronutrients like calcium, potassium, magnesium and lithium. It’s the only drinkable mineral water in Texas. People also bathe in it as well to absorb its curative properties.

“Since our founding days, Mineral Wells has been built upon the most fundamental of elements – water,” said Rose Jordan, director of tourism at Visit Mineral Wells. “The mineral-rich water from our wells is healthful, healing and pure; it’s liquid gold.”

The Wellness Capital of Texas

Mineral Wells was settled in the later 1800s. By 1900, more than 150,000 visitors came from across the U.S. to bathe and drink in the mineral pools and spas. Mineral Wells quickly became  Texas’ most popular spa resort town. It welcomed politicians and celebrities such as President Dwight Eisenhower, Lyndon B. Johnson (before he was president), Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Roy Rogers and the Three Stooges.

In 1909, Mineral Wells had seven wells and pavilions, four bathing houses, 46 hotels and boarding houses, and two sanatoriums.

“The minerals in our water are naturally occurring; not added or created in some factory. In a world where people are discovering that water can be as processed as cheese, they are looking for natural options,” said Carol Elder, who owns Famous Mineral Water Company, which bottles Crazy Water, the only water company still in business in Mineral Wells.

One of the destinations in Mineral Wells, Clark Gardens, a botanical garden, hosted the World Wellness Weekend on September 20-22 where activities prioritized self-care involving the water. Crazy Wellness Retreats are held every quarter and offer up mineral water baths among other activities.

“A wellness-minded traveller now seeks opportunities to experience nature, and we are rich in those,” Jordan said.”We are using our natural bounty – mineral water, lakes, rivers, parks and more – to build a healthful future for people.”
