We’ve progressed significantly from the era of tapping on the television and enhancing antennas with aluminum foil as if it were second nature. In a world marked by perpetual technological advancements, one constant is society’s enduring affection for sitting in front of the TV screen. Regardless of whether your preferred show is The Voice or Real Housewives of Atlanta, everyone has that one series that captivates them completely. The notion of unwinding after a lengthy day by indulging in your favorite show is undoubtedly comforting. However, there arises a juncture where one must ponder whether their television consumption has reached excessive levels.

The adage “all things in moderation” holds true, especially in the context of television consumption. Like with most things, indulging excessively in anything can have potential drawbacks. You might be curious as to how watching television could be deemed unhealthy. According to livescience.com, a study found that those who spent more than four hours per day in front of the television were more likely to experience heart complications in comparison to those who watched less than two hours of tv per day. While it may not always imply physical harm, prolonged periods of sitting in one place could eventually pose a risk. Television, once a means of escape that brought loved ones together for a brief period, has evolved over the years. The concept of watching a single show or movie has transformed into the prevalent phenomenon known as “binging.”

Labeling excessive television watching as inherently unhealthy is subjective. While there are factors such as a sedentary lifestyle and the content consumed during extended TV sessions, the act of leisurely sitting in front of a television doesn’t automatically lead to an unhealthy lifestyle. An article found on healthline.com states, “There’s nothing wrong with occasionally using TV to help relieve or express painful emotions. But problems can develop when TV becomes your primary coping strategy and keeps you from seeking out more productive methods of dealing with distress. The key lies in striking a balance and being conscious of one’s overall lifestyle. It ultimately hinges on taking control and ensuring an active routine when away from the screen. Incorporating frequent physical activity, maintaining a well-rounded diet, and engaging in social interactions are crucial components of a healthy lifestyle. When coupled with intentional television viewing – where content is uplifting and doesn’t create a negative mental space – it can become a form of relaxation and entertainment without compromising well-being. Like many things in life, moderation and mindful choices are the pillars to a healthy relationship with television.

Even with technology becoming more advanced by the day, TV is here to remain. Whether it’s on your grandmother’s plastic-covered couch or through your preferred streaming service on a big screen, the sense of comfort derived from sitting in front of the television is unparalleled. I think we can all confidently agree that watching reruns of Martin and Living Single will only cause lots of laughter, which may eventually cause a faint stomach cramp. Nothing you can’t handle, right? Besides, laughter is the best medicine, or so they say. Remember, it’s only unhealthy if you allow it to be.
