What if changing a diaper could change the world?
That’s the guiding force behind The Happy Hues Company, a Black-mom founded baby essentials brand that’s building a better world by nurturing happy, healthy babies both inside and out through their collection of shea butter infused diapers and wipes that feature diverse cultural representation.
“Happy Hues is a company that’s really focused on building community, confidence, and a sense of joy amongst little ones,” founder Eunique Jones-Gibson tells Elev8. Jones-Gibson is a mother of three who wanted to make sure her children saw affirmations and reflections of their value and worth in every aspect of their life, even down to their training pants.
“One night I was putting a pair of training pants on [my daughter] and there was an image of Cinderella on those training pants. And that particular night, I really didn’t want to put Cinderella on her,” Jones-Gibson shares. After struggling to find any baby care brands that reflected her and her daughter’s culture, she decided it was time to create the change she wanted to see. “I realized all children deserve to be reflected and we should be normalizing all sorts of hues and differences and celebrating them and teaching children community at this age.”
Parents won’t have any trouble finding representation for their kiddos on the baby aisle anymore. Just over a year after Happy Hues made its online debut, the Black-owned baby brand recently announced a national retail expansion through a partnership with Target, making them the first Black woman-owned diaper brand to be sold in Target stores nationwide.
“Finally launching, in such a highly competitive category, and as a Black-owned and mom-founded business is mind blowing,” Jones Gibson said in a press release. “It’s a testament to how necessary the enduring message of joy, happiness and community is within the diaper aisle. It feels good to know that we’re enhancing the journey not only through our products, but in how we’re helping to affirm little ones along the way.”
Happy Hues offers unisex shea butter-infused diapers called “Big-Ups” designed with hyper-dry absorption technology that feature a double leak guard and a freshness flag wetness indicator. The hypoallergenic training pants and diapers offer a snug, comfortable fit for babies and toddlers age 0-5.
And these baby care products are as healthy for little ones’ growing minds as they are for their little baby bottoms. Big-ups feature designs and prints like the “I Am” affirmations and “You’ve Got This” to motivate parents during the sometimes hectic changing table routine.
Big-ups are available in two categories, Cuddlers, designed for newborns and infants, and Go-Getters, tailored for walkers and crawlers. Go-Getters showcase reimaginings of classic hip-hop songs like “Poop! There it is” and “Hug Life” and “Hey Young World” as a wink to the parents because who says changing a dirty diaper can’t be fun? And no diaper change is complete without Happy Hues’ Wipe Me Downs, fragrance-free baby wipes.
In addition to diapers and wipes that keep baby clean and comfy, Happy Hues collection of baby care essentials also feature an animated series featuring the Happy Hues Crew Members that will bring joy and representation to little ones and their parents and caregivers. Because even in joy of childrearing and parenthood, an extra boost of happiness is sometimes needed.
The Journey to Happy
Jones-Gibson herself is a mother of two sons and one daughter. When her youngest was born, she struggled with postpartum depression, a mood disorder that impacts nearly 44 percent of Black mothers. Yet it was this harrowing experience that inspired her to seek happiness in her day-to-day child care tasks and thus, Happy Hues came to be.
“I absolutely had some postpartum depression and I was like, what could’ve got me out of that? What could’ve helped me?” Jones-Gibson reflects. “In addition to the supportive village that I had, maybe changing a diaper at 2am and seeing a positive message or opening up a pack of diapers and chuckling because the design says ‘poop there it is’ or ‘hug life’ could lift me up.”
Through self-care practices like exercise and changes to her diet in addition to the love and support of her family and community, Jones-Gibson found healing and found her joy again. Now she’s spreading that joy with other parents who may need an infusion of humor or a helping hand to get through constant changes of parenthood.
Living With Purpose
Spreading love, helping others, and celebrating the culture is at the core of all Eunique Jones-Gibson touches. She is a professional brand builder, cultural architect, and the creative force behind platforms and products that always center and elevate the rich diversity of the Black experience.
“I want to be remembered as someone who had a tremendous amount of love, inspiration and respect for our culture and truly believed that changing the world was possible,” Jones-Gibson shares about her motivation to create content and products that’s for us, by us. She does this through her company Culture Brands which operates as a media company, an agency, and a producer of not only Happy Hues, but also the online publication for Black excellence, Because of Them We Can, the family centered games #CultureTags, WRECKoncilable Differences, and What’s The Word, and multiple brand deals.
Jones-Gibson says she is motivated to continue to create brands that celebrate our culture and that will last far beyond her. “I just really understood that I want to leave an amazing legacy, I want to have a positive impact on the world. I don’t just want to exist, I want my life to mean something.”
She Can Do All Things.
How does one person balance marriage and motherhood, multiple brands and businesses, a media publication, and now a booming baby-care business? In addition leaning on her family, who she calls her North Star, Jones-Gibson gets her help from something even higher.
“We’re the generation that really went hard on Philippians 3:14: ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’ That is just one of the scriptures that just got ingrained into our DNA and some of us just had the audacity to really believe it, I think I’m one of those individuals.” Jones-Gibson says. She has unshakeable faith in all of her ideas because she knows she’s not doing this life alone. “I don’t have confidence in me. My confidence is in who created me, who guides me, who wakes me up every day. My goal is to make God smile.”
