Enjoying that second cup of coffee in the morning could actually do more good than harm. According to the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, “drinking several cups of caffeinated coffee or tea a day may protect against Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke.” Several health complications that affect many on a daily basis could potentially be mitigated with a couple extra sips of coffee.

A study led by Chaouf Ke, associate professor in the department of epidemiology and biostatistics at Soochow University in China, along with a group of researchers, examined the drinking habits of tea and coffee drinkers in  the U.K. At the start of the study, no participant showed history of cardiometabolic diseases. While coffee drinkers produced the highest reduction in risk, with a 50% decrease among those at the lower risk, individuals who consumed both tea and coffee were 40% less likely to develop health issues.

While sometimes health complications are out of one’s control, those who happened to have developed a cardiometabolic disease overtime were still able to lower the risk of adding yet another disease to the list by drinking a reasonable amount of coffee each day.

“Everything in moderation is probably the best way to do it. If someone is having a couple cups of coffee a day, this suggests that dose might be protective,” Dr. Luke Laffin, co-director of the Center for Blood Pressure Disorders at the Cleveland Clinic, shared.

Although coffee has many pros, depending on the type of heart disease, too much coffee can be detrimental. A cup of day may keep the doctor away, for now, but the consumption of caffeinated beverages that contain a high quantity of sugars are not as beneficial. Although they taste delicious, they can contribute to long-term health effects that lead to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

In the end, it’s not just about your daily cup or two of coffee and tea, but more so about making mindful decisions that will positively impact your well-being in the long run.
